Starring the fabulous Jet Li, this incredible historical epic with its deft blend of high drama, slapstick and more subtle forms of comedy coupled with breathtaking martial arts action, represents Hong Kong?filmmaking at its very best. The story contains many serpentine twists and a complex mixture of plots and subplots. The story is set during the Manchu dynasty in Canton. Li plays Sai-Yuk, a courageous young martial-arts expert who is the very best around, as can be seen in the opening kung-fu matches. Those he beats swear vengeance and a chaotic fight breaks out. All involved, including Sai-Yuk, end up in jail. Sai-Yuk’s father is most displeased. Later Tiger Lei, a local official, decrees that whoever can beat his wife Siu Huan in a match will win his daughter Ting Ting’s hand in marriage. Lei then builds an enormous scaffold on which the combatants will fight; the first fighter to touch the ground loses. Sai-Yuk gladly takes on the feisty mother.
Fong Sai Yuk 1: After the success of the “Once Upon A Time In China” series, Jet Li returned to the screen to play Fong Sai Yuk, another Chinese folk hero. However, Fong Sai Yuk and Wong Fei Hung are completely different characters. Unlike the wise and stoic Wong Fei Hung, Fong Sai Yuk is a young, goofy, playful, momma’s boy who also happens to be a martial arts master. When former bandit Tiger Lu (Chan Chung Yung) goes straight, he decides to win over the people by hosting a kung-fu competition with his daughter Ting Ting (Michelle Reis) as the prize. The rules are simple: whoever can knock his wife Siu Lee Wan (Sibelle Hu) off a wooden tower wins. Sai Yuk enters the competition, and the fight extends to the heads of the audience! However, when he gets a glimpse of Ting Ting’s homely maid impersonating her, he throws the competition. This forces his mom (Josephine Siao) to masquerade as Sai Yuk’s older brother and enter the competition to restore the family name. She defeats Lee Wan, who then falls in love with her, while Tiger Lu demands she marry Ting Ting. As if this wasn’t enough, the emperor’s agent is in town looking for members of the revolutionary Red Flower Society, a group of which Sai Yuk’s dad is a member.
Fong Sai Yuk 2:
Jet Li returns again as Fong Sai Yuk in this sequel to the first film of the same name. This time, Sai Yuk is a full member of the Red Flower society. However, he’s having trouble accepting their strict rules, and he’s made an enemy of Mr. Ma, the cruel son of the former leader. Sai Yuk tries to prove himself by volunteering for a mission to intercept a group of Japanese Samurai who are carrying a box with secret information vital to the cheif of the Red Flower society. He fails the mission, but wins the heart of the governor’s daughter. When Mr. Ma mocks him, Sai Yuk rashly promises to woo the daughter and regain the box. However, he’s already married to Ting Ting, and…
