Master of Tai Chi

taichimasternew Master of Tai Chi

Directed by Yuen Wo Ping and developed from his earlier Tai Chi 2 movie, also starring Jason Wu Jing; this is a 28-part tv series produced in 1997.

Loosely based on the life of Yang Yu Qian (Wu Jing), the founder of the Yang school of Tai Chi. Son of a skilled martial arts expert he was unable to meet the high expectations of his father due to his weak physical form that inhibits his ability to attain a higher level of skill in the external arts. Yang Yu Qian thus left for Beijing to search for masters able to help him.
While there he met a Bagua (Eight Diagram) master, Dong Han-Cheng. Bagua is an internal school of martial arts. Dong Han-Cheng also advised him to study an internal form of martial arts but was not willng to accept Yang Yu Qian as his disciple due to unfinished business.
Yang Yu Qian also met a highly skilled Tai Chi exponent and resolved to seek out a Tai Chi master by the name of
Chen Zheng-Ying, elder of a remote village. After much hardship he managed to find the village but the village chief refused to teach him as the rules are that Tai Chi must not be taught to outsiders nor to women. He resorted to secretly watching their training and it was during his stay at the village that he found out that the Tai Chi exponent he’d saw in Beijing is actually the daughter of the village chief. She was in a man’s disguise because of those family rules.
She developed a liking for Yang Yu Qian and helped him to master Tai Chi by teaching him and helping him to secretly watch her father as he teaches her. Eventually, he was found out by the master but was accepted as his disciple after much persuasion by his daughter.

Due to a past incidence between Chen Zheng Ying and a Prince of the Qing court, he village was attacked by Qing soldiers and Chen Zheng Ying surrendered to them in order to save the villagers’ lives. Yang Yu Qian traveled to Beijing in an attempt to save his master. There, he was forced to fight several top exponents of other martial arts schools and finally the Qing Prince.whom he defeated and thus secured the release of his master.

Through the patronage of another Qing Prince, Yang Yu Qian was able to open a Tai Chi dojo and he met his father again.

This is the definitive Wu Jing show to add to your Wu Jing collection. It is also a superb martial arts series featuring real martial arts exponents. Another good reason is the very beautiful HK actress Amy Fan who is relatively unknown outside of HK. Not to be missed is the inclusion of that rarely seen internal art form of Bagua and the main fight event between Tai Chi and Bagua. Wu Jing is at his best here with his very rubbery face in the comic moments here and although Yuen Wo Ping is known to be too heavy handed and lacking in subtle use of comic moments, he did not go over the top here. Wu Jing spend months training in a real Chen village to prepare for his role in Tai Chi Master 2 and Master of Tai Chi as Tai Chi was not his original martial arts form. His body movements is graceful yet powerful when executing the Chen style of Tai Chi. Get this if you are a Tai Chi practitioner as it uses the original Chen form as its basis. I’d shown this series to some friends who practice Tai Chi and they all loved it and said the show has inspired and motivated them in their personal practices. The fighting is first class and I have put a host of links below. This is my personal favourite show.

Wing Chun

Wing+Chun Wing ChunWing Chun is a joint HK and China production.

Yuen Biao, as Leung Jan, is a physician and master in the martial arts of Wing Chun in Foshan. He’d lost his wife after she gave birth to their son, Leung Bik; acted by Nicholas Tse.
The rules of Wing Chun forbids each master from transmitting the art to more than 1 person but Leung Jan was reluctant to teach it to his son due to some misunderstandings when Leung Bik was young. Leung Jan felt he was too impulsive and a trouble-maker. Thus he refused to teach Wing Chun to Leung Bik.
In frustration, Leung Bik resorted to learning martial arts from various sects to prove to his father that he doesn’t need Wing Chun in order to be a good fighter.

This proved to the father that Leung Bik doesn’t deserve to learn Wing Chun due to his aggressive and bad tempered nature. He wanted Leung Bik to study and learn TCM but Leung Bik only wanted to learn martial arts. In Foshan, Leung Bik’s main rival is a rich man’s son who although do not know martial arts uses his henchmen to bully the towns folk. Because of this, Leung Bik is constantly fighting with him and his men in order to stop his bullying.

Other characters are Leung Bik’s younger but studious brother who is studying wetern medicine, Little Bun; the daughter of Leung Jan’s housekeeper, Ko Ming and his master (Master Hong Fu), Rain Li who is Leung Bik’s main love but who wants him to give up martial arts, and then there’s 9th Auntie who is the younger sister ofLeung Jan’s departed wife. She fills the role of Leung Jan’s love interest.

Into this picture comes Sammo Hung as Uncle Wah who eventually taught Wing Chun to Leung Bik when he sought refuge with Uncle Wah in HK.

This is actually a better version of Wing Chun than last seen in TVB’s Real Kungfu. Partly because the plot is meatier, the acting is more varied due to a larger main cast. Despite Sammo’s heavy compliment of Nic Tse’s martial arts standard, he’s really stiff and un-natural. Nic’s good in acting as his real self; which is that of a spoilt rich brat. So you can see that I’m not a fan of Nic but the acting of the other main and supporting cast is very good and that lifts this series above the failure level. Disappointing is Rain’s character which is still wooden despite her many years of experience by now.

A great effort after the dud that was Return of the Condor Heroes, Bi Xue Jian was a return to straight forward story telling with little fluff. The acting of the main leads made this tv series a great success, although the performance of Sun Feifei was very understated when compared to that of Ping Zhong Xia Ying.
BXJ is a great show for fans of wuxia and GJ. The acting is great and the effects were not overwhelming. It was onl in the last third of the show that it starts to slow down and the protagonist gets mired in the politics of the rebel leader and his coterie.
Highly recommended for those who love wuxia.

Tian Long Ba Bu (2002) ????

TTLB Tian Long Ba Bu (2002) ????

Third in the series of Jin Yong’s novel adaptation by Zhang Ji Zhong, it is also known as Demi-Gods, Semi-Devils. An epic story about the lives of 3 young men with different aims in life and how their paths crossed and ended up sworn brothers.

Epic in proportion and scope as the story shifts among the 3 main characters. Plots range from the mundane romance to secret martial arts skills and to politics between the tribes outside of China and the China.

The story of Qiao Feng, the exiled Beggar Sect leader is the most reverting and the most depressing as he deals with the fact that he had killed his lover with his bare hands in a mistakened identity fight, having to bring up her younger sister who is desperately in love with him, and finally, living with the fact that he is not a Han Chinese as he had thought he was but was in reality a Khitan by birth. Thus he as shunned by the Han Chinese people that he had grew up with.

Cast

  • Hu Jun as Qiao Feng
  • Jimmy Lin as Duan Yu
  • Gao Hu as Xu Zhu
  • Liu Yi Fei as Wang Yu Yan
  • Liu Tao as A Zhu

Fully deserving of the rating due to the epic scope, huge cast, great acting all round. The only bad spot is Jimmy’s constant panda eyes. Qiao Feng has the saddest story of the three and died a hero’s death, unable and unwilling to help his own people conquer his adoptive Han country.

Legend of the Condor Heroes (LOCH) 2003

LOCH Legend of the Condor Heroes (LOCH) 2003

This is another Jin Yong novel adapted by China’s Zhang Ji Zhong in a follow up of his earlier work on Xiao Ao Jiang Hu.
The title of this series is ????? (She Diao Ying Xiong Zhuan ), aka Brave Archer, Legend of the Condor Heroes.

As with all his much loved novels, various tv adaptations were done on this novel; with Hongkong’s TVB station having produced it twice.

The story’s centered around the 2 sons of 2 sworn brothers residing in the Cow Herders Village late Song period when the kingdom was weakened by corrupt officials who were bribed or intimidated by the surrounding hostile states, namely the Jin Empire. The young boys were separated when young and one (Guo Jing) was accepted into Genghis Khan’s clan, the other (Yang Kang) was adopted by a prince of the Jin Empire.
