Drunken Monkey

Drunken Monkey

Drunken Monkey is that rare oddity of a movie for the aficionado of exotic Chinese martial arts style featuring Monkey Fist and its variation Drunken Monkey Fist.

The story starts with Man Bil (Liu Chia Liang) and his brother Man Pao leading an escort of valuable goods. They both work for the Chun Yuen Escort Agency run by Master Yui Hoi Yeung (Chi Kuan Chun). Unknown to Bil, his brother is in cahoots with Master Yui to smuggle opium into the provinces. One night while they were resting in an inn during an escort Bil saw his brother behaving suspiciously and a stranger and accepting a parcel. As Bil was approaching Man Pao to question him, a stranger appeared suddenly and they  fought briefly before the stranger identified himself as Inspector Hung Yat Fu (Gordon Liu) from the capital Nanking on his way to Canton to investigate reports of opium smuggling. The inspector borrowed a horse from Bil for his journey.

Bil and his group returned to the agency after completing their assignment and when he found opium smoking implements in his brother’s room he wanted to hand him over to the police. Man Pao and his wife begged Bil to give him another chance as they have young children to take care of. Bil warned his brother not to be involved in the opium trade.

Yui Hoi Yeung was with them on their next mission. At the start of it they encountered smoke obscuring the road ahead and Man Pao volunteered to investigate it. When he did not return, Bil went into the smoke only to find his brother lying on the ground. When he turned his brother over, Man Pao stabbed him in the stomach with a knife. Bil knocked his brother out and staggered into the forest only to find the rest of the escort agency waiting for him. After a brief fight Bil eluded them and hide in a deserted village but Yui Hoi Yeung and his men soon appeared. With a serious wound, Bil was no match for Yui Hoi Yeung’s Iron Arms and ran away only to be attacked by his brother again. Stunned, he was pushed into the water and presumed dead by his attackers.

Chan Kai Yip (Lau Wing Kin) is the young scion of Chan Sing Kum, a rich merchant. Chan Kai Yip has a fixation on Monkey Fist martial arts and spends all his time trying to create the ultimate Monkey Fist manual. Partnering him in his mad pursuit is family’s great uncle Chan Chao Tat (Jason Wu Jing). Chan Chao Tat, although young is the family’s patriarch due to the fact the he is the son of their grandfather’s brother who was taken in by Chan Sing Kum. Adding to this mad family is Chan Kai Yip’s mum who supports her son’s non-scholarly activities.

A young boat girl Siu Ma (Shannon Yao) found the unconscious Bil and rescued him. Living in seclusionm he adopted her as his god-daughter and taught her Monkey Fist.

Chan Kai Yip and Chan Chao Tat were send down to Canton by Kai Yip’s father for further studies but they took this opportunity to look for a famous Monkey Fist master long rumored to be in that area but has since disappeared. They came into contact and saw Siu Ma using her Monkey Fist and Chao Tat followed her back to her home. The two young men were also seen by Inspector Hung who questioned them on the whereabouts of Bil as they claimed Bil is their master. The inspector returned to Chun Yuen Escort Agency not knowing that Master Yui Hoi Yeung and Man Pao were responsible for Bil’s disappearance. Their suspicion aroused, Man Pao trailed the inspector who in turned trailed the 2 young men back to Bil’s hideout. Chan Kai Yip and Chan Chao Tat wanted to bed Bil to accept them as his disciples but Bil refused and send them packing. The inspector appeared and while they were talking, Siu Ma went to do her errands and was promptly ambushed by Man Pao and his men. Chan Kai Yip and Chan Chao Tat were no match when they tried to save her and she was taken away to a nearby temple. The inspector and Bil rushed to the temple to find that Man Pao has drugged her with opium water and locked her in a cell. Man Pao forced Bil to fight and kill the inspector by threatening to rape the unconscious Siu Ma. In the pretext of fighting each other, the inspector aided Bil by giving him alcohol to boast his Drunken Monkey strength to break into the cell holding Siu Ma. The inspector died blocking the door when Man Pao’s men tried to enter the building.

Bil and the unconscious Siu Ma took cover with the 2 young men and in gratitude he took them in as disciples and taught them Monkey Fist as well as Drunken Monkey Fist.

In the end fight, the 2 young men were no match for Yui Hoi Yeung’s Iron Arms but with the help of Siu Man and Bil they were able to route the villains. Bil spared his brother’s life when Siu Ma wanted to kill him.

If you are looking for a good plot and storyline then you won’t find it here. What you will find here are Liu Chia Liang, Gordon Liu, Jason Wu Jing, and new comer Shannon Yao. And of course, Monkey Fist. Coming from Liu Chia Liang, the fight scenes are superb and worth the price of the disc, although for plotline he had done better. Jason Wu Jing is especially good here with his rubbery face coupled with his fantastic martial arts skill. This a good addition to your collection of martial arts movies.
