Wing Chun is a joint HK and China production.
Yuen Biao, as Leung Jan, is a physician and master in the martial arts of Wing Chun in Foshan. He’d lost his wife after she gave birth to their son, Leung Bik; acted by Nicholas Tse.
The rules of Wing Chun forbids each master from transmitting the art to more than 1 person but Leung Jan was reluctant to teach it to his son due to some misunderstandings when Leung Bik was young. Leung Jan felt he was too impulsive and a trouble-maker. Thus he refused to teach Wing Chun to Leung Bik.
In frustration, Leung Bik resorted to learning martial arts from various sects to prove to his father that he doesn’t need Wing Chun in order to be a good fighter.
This proved to the father that Leung Bik doesn’t deserve to learn Wing Chun due to his aggressive and bad tempered nature. He wanted Leung Bik to study and learn TCM but Leung Bik only wanted to learn martial arts. In Foshan, Leung Bik’s main rival is a rich man’s son who although do not know martial arts uses his henchmen to bully the towns folk. Because of this, Leung Bik is constantly fighting with him and his men in order to stop his bullying.
Other characters are Leung Bik’s younger but studious brother who is studying wetern medicine, Little Bun; the daughter of Leung Jan’s housekeeper, Ko Ming and his master (Master Hong Fu), Rain Li who is Leung Bik’s main love but who wants him to give up martial arts, and then there’s 9th Auntie who is the younger sister ofLeung Jan’s departed wife. She fills the role of Leung Jan’s love interest.
Into this picture comes Sammo Hung as Uncle Wah who eventually taught Wing Chun to Leung Bik when he sought refuge with Uncle Wah in HK.

This is actually a better version of Wing Chun than last seen in TVB’s Real Kungfu. Partly because the plot is meatier, the acting is more varied due to a larger main cast. Despite Sammo’s heavy compliment of Nic Tse’s martial arts standard, he’s really stiff and un-natural. Nic’s good in acting as his real self; which is that of a spoilt rich brat. So you can see that I’m not a fan of Nic but the acting of the other main and supporting cast is very good and that lifts this series above the failure level. Disappointing is Rain’s character which is still wooden despite her many years of experience by now.

Directed by Derek Yee and produced by Peter Chan. The Protege is about a less well explored side of the illegal drug trade which is the manufacturer and supplier.
Andy Lau plays the boss of a drug lab but is not in the best of health. He has taken in an assistant (Daniel Wu)and wants to groom this young man to take over his business so that he can retire with his family.
Daniel has been an undercover police officer since his graduation from the Police Academy and his assigned duty was to infiltrate the drug supply side of the business. Daniel hated the drug scene and the fact that he has to act as the assistant to one of the biggest supplier in HK. He became involved with a female junkie neighbour and he got her to kick the habit. The untimely appearance of her wandering druggie husband put an end to his effort. She died from reaction to a bad drug and he became more than convinced of his mission. and longs to end his undercover role but cannot as he has not found the drug supplier yet. Andy made his wish come true by appointing Daniel as his successor and shown him his lab, and brought him to Thailand to meet his supplier.
With this information, Daniel was able to close down the whole operation and put Andy under arrest. What happens after that? Well that’s for you to find out.

This is a very much under-rated movie coming out of HK and eclipsed by less deserving and over-hyped productions.
Andy put in a great performance as a drug supplier living on borrowed time and wanting to leave the trade and spend the remaining time with his family. Daniel is best known for his wooden acting and in this role as an undercover officer his woodenness does him good stead as one who must hide all traces of his innermost thoughts, being who he is. Thus, even the face cannot betray any signs.
Louis Koo put in a surprising appearance as a junkie. I couldn’t even recognise him in this role as he did the impossible of masking his pretty-boy looks.

The big Korean monster smash hit of 2006 by Bong Joon Ho swept the Korean box-office in a tidal wave. It then went on to draw large audiences throughout Asian cinemas.
A monster creature rosed from the polluted Han river and caused much chaos as it rampaged through the gathered crowd, killing and maiming it’s way. Finally, it snatched a young girl with its tail and took her away.
The young girl’s family was frustrated by the authorities lack of belief in the existence of such a monster; and thus, lack of action in attempting to look for the missing girl.
The desperate family scoured the tunnels beneath the city hoping against hope that their youngest is still alive.

What made this movie different is that there are no beautiful plastic faces in this show. Everyone is pretty much of the average-joe looks. And this is what made the whole movie believable and kept the viewers rooting for this very ordinary family.
In the end, we feel sympathy for the monster who must die as in all monster movies. It did not choose to be a monster but was created by Man’s polluting. It killed not because it enjoyed killing but because of food. It captured humans not because it enjoyed torturing but because it must prepare for its offspring.

Latest installment in the series, this movie has no relationship with the 2 earlier movies as the main actors and actresses are all different as well as having a different storyline.
The story starts in Hong Kong at a dinner attended by 2 rival triad leaders, one of them is acted by Ti Lung. The rival leader requested Ti Lung’s daughter, Lim Aryoung, to perform a sword dance for which she is noted. During the dance, a henchman of the opposite faction threw glass onto the floor to humiliate Aryoung. She exacted her punishment by piercing his hand with her sword. A fight was barely averted by her father.
The next day, Aryoung assassinated the rival gang leader and Ti Lung hurriedly packed her off to Korea for her own protection.
Arriving in Korea, she was placed under the care of a small-time hood, Ki Chul, under the impression that he could speak Chinese. A female Korean translator, Hyun Young, was brought in to help but she was so terrified of offending the hoods she deliberately gave pleasant translations that was opposite of what Aryoung actually said. These mistranslations formed the bulk of the comedy moments of this movie.
The HK triad sent killers after Aryoung but Ki Chul thought they were after him, not realising Aryoung’s actual background and fighting skills. It was only when a rival Korean gang leader had captured his underlings and almost beaten him to death that Aryoung showed her true abilities to Ki Chul. From that moment his attitude towards her changed and mutual affections rose between them.
A highlight pf this movie is a car chase with Aryoung sitting in Ki Chul’s laps and driving the car in an attempt to escape killers sent from Hong Kong. Ki Chul was aroused and both became excited when the car hit various bumps on the road and a final drive down a stair case.
The show’s last part was where Ti Lung was injured by a rival and Aryoung returns back to Hong Kong to take revenge. Ki Chul follows her with his gang to lend support.
Cast:
Shu Qi as Lim Aryong
Lee Bum Soo as Ki Chul
Hyun Young as the mousey Korean interpretor
Ti Lung as Lim Aryoung’s HK triad father

This show’s interesting and watchable. Both Shu Qi and Lee Bum Soo are competent actors but Hyun Young was hilarious with her mis-translations in the first half. The fighting is good even though Shu Qi obviously used a stunt double but that was not so noticeable.
